He goes before and behind us to protect us during the transitions in our lives.

“The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever,” Psalm 121:7-8 (NLT).

In international student ministry, where there is a great deal of transiency, we must embrace the idea that God may use other believers to help complete His work. We should feel encouraged when He leads our international friends to other brothers and sisters who can further minister to them! I am reminded of a story one of our ministry friends sent in about a scholar from East Asia and her teenaged son. Our friend writes:

“For nearly a year, I have had a Bible study with some visiting scholars from East Asia. It's been very interesting to say the least. Since Dahlia was going to be returning home in a month, her teenaged son, Luke, joined us for the last month. Wow, our studies got even more lively! The parent-teen dynamic during the study was humorous at times. One day, Dahlia called me and said she would like Luke to spend some time with American teens. I quickly prayed, and God reminded me of a dear family with eight kids. Perfect situation for an only child! They agreed to have Luke come visit for a three-night stay. He loved it! When Luke returned to Bible study the next week, he asked me to see if he could visit the family again. I called them and we were able to arrange another stay! I took Dahlia with me to the church so she could meet the family upon the end of Luke's stay with them. What an amazing and eye-opening experience for all. The loving interaction between kids and parents, being able to discuss the life issues and enjoy each other's company, was something Dahlia had never seen. Luke was so moved by the way this family interacted. He didn't want to leave, but he and Dahlia had to go back to East Asia just a few days a later. Before going home, Luke had already begun emailing one of the family's sons. I can't help but see Luke's time with this American family as one of God's many blessings during their time here in the United States. It's as if He was keeping watch over both Dahlia and Luke and gave them—and the American family—new friendships just before facing a major transition in their lives.”

Let us continue to pray over our ministry partners and volunteers as they help create moments that invite the Lord's loving presence. God works in mysterious ways—large and small—to show that He is watching over us. He goes before and behind us to protect us during the transitions in our lives. May we learn to listen to His still, small voice.
